The elevator doors slid shut with a soft chime, sealing Yuji and Megumi inside. Yuji’s breath came in ragged gasps, his knuckles white where he gripped the railing. The woman’s humming still echoed in his skull, a melody that felt like it was stitching itself into his bones. “That was too close,” Megumi said, his voice flat but his eyes sharp. He pressed the button for the lobby, but the panel flickered—the numbers danced, then settled on a single, pulsing digit: 12. “It’s taking us there,” Yuji said, a grim smile tugging at his lips. “Guess we don’t have a choice.” The elevator lurched to a stop. The doors opened onto a hallway that smelled of old paper and wet concrete. The lights were off, but a faint, amber glow bled from under a door at the far end. The carpet was worn, the walls lined with faded motivational posters that read “Teamwork” and “Synergy” in cheerful fonts that now felt like threats. They stepped out. The air was cold, heavy, and tasted of copper. Megumi summoned his shadow dogs, their low growls the only sound as they padded ahead. Yuji followed, his fists clenched, ready for anything. The door at the end of the hall was ajar. Beyond it, a single room stretched impossibly wide—a vast, open office space filled with rows of desks, each one occupied by a figure in business attire. They sat motionless, faces pale, eyes open but unseeing. At the center of the room, a woman in a crisp suit stood behind a reception desk, her smile too wide, her teeth too many. “Welcome to the twelfth floor,” she said, her voice a chorus of whispers. “We’ve been expecting you. The building is very hungry today.” Yuji felt Sukuna stir, a low chuckle rumbling in his chest. “Interesting. She’s not the core—she’s just a receptionist.” Megumi’s hand went to his cursed tools. “Then where’s the real curse?” The woman tilted her head, and the seated figures rose in unison, their movements jerky, puppet-like. “The core is everywhere. This floor is its heart. And you’ve just walked into its bloodstream.” The lights flickered, and the figures began to advance.
